🌊 Elevated Rip Current Risk Along the Texas Coast Today

If you’re heading to the Texas coast today, be sure to check beach conditions before getting in the water. An elevated rip current risk is in place for much of the Texas coastline, creating dangerous swimming conditions.

What is a Rip Current?

A rip current is a powerful, narrow channel of water flowing away from the beach. These currents can quickly pull even experienced swimmers away from shore. They don’t pull you underwater—they carry you away from the beach.

Why is the Risk Elevated Today?

Persistent onshore winds and building waves are creating stronger and more frequent rip currents along Texas beaches. Even if the weather looks great, dangerous surf conditions can still be present.

Beach Safety Tips

  • 🏖️ Swim near a lifeguard whenever possible.
  • 🚩 Pay attention to beach warning flags and local advisories.
  • 👨‍👩‍👧 Never leave children unattended near the water.
  • 🌊 Avoid swimming alone.

If You’re Caught in a Rip Current

Stay calm. Don’t fight the current by swimming straight back to shore. Instead, swim parallel to the shoreline until you’re free of the current, then angle back toward the beach. If you can’t escape, float or tread water and wave for help.

Stay Weather Aware

With many people visiting the coast this weekend and attending FIFA-related activities across Texas, beach safety should be part of your plans. Before heading to the beach, check the latest forecast and surf conditions.

A little preparation can help ensure a safe and enjoyable day along the Texas coast.
