When a tropical system approaches Southeast Texas, one of the first questions everyone asks is:
“How much rain am I going to get?”
While that seems like a simple question, it is often one of the most difficult forecasts meteorologists have to make. Tropical Storm Beryl provided another reminder that rainfall forecasting with tropical systems is far more complicated than simply following the center of the storm.
Tropical Systems Don’t Spread Rain Evenly
Unlike winter storms or large frontal systems, tropical cyclones produce rainfall in narrow bands that continuously evolve. Some communities can experience hours of torrential rainfall while locations only 15 to 30 miles away receive very little.
This creates sharp rainfall gradients that can be nearly impossible to pinpoint several days in advance.
During Beryl, many forecast models correctly predicted that Southeast Texas would receive heavy rainfall somewhere across the region. What remained uncertain—even within 24 hours of landfall—was exactly where the heaviest rain bands would set up.
That uncertainty ultimately made a tremendous difference in rainfall totals.
One Band Can Make All the Difference
The strongest rain bands in a tropical cyclone often rotate around the circulation like spokes on a wheel.
If one of these bands stalls over your neighborhood for several hours, rainfall can quickly reach 5 to 10 inches or more. Just a few miles away, where the band never develops, totals may only reach one or two inches.
This is why meteorologists often say:
“Everyone will not receive the same amount of rain.”
That statement may sound vague, but it accurately reflects how tropical rainfall behaves.
Small Changes Produce Big Differences
One of the biggest forecasting challenges during Beryl involved small shifts in the storm’s track.
A movement of only 20 to 40 miles can dramatically change:
- Where the deepest tropical moisture sets up
- Which communities experience training rain bands
- Where the strongest winds occur
- The highest tornado potential
- Flooding impacts
To the public, a 20-mile forecast adjustment may not seem significant.
For meteorologists, it can completely change the rainfall forecast for entire counties.
Models Continue to Improve
Forecast models today are significantly better than they were even a decade ago.
Meteorologists now use dozens of different numerical models, including global and high-resolution guidance, to estimate rainfall potential. Ensemble forecasting also helps identify areas where confidence is higher or lower.
Even with these improvements, however, no model can perfectly predict where every rain band will form.
Thunderstorms within tropical cyclones constantly develop, weaken, merge, and reorganize. These processes occur on scales much smaller than even the highest-resolution weather models can accurately simulate.
Why Forecasts Often Show a Range
You may notice forecasts that read:
“Most locations: 2–5 inches with isolated amounts over 8 inches.”
Some people wonder why meteorologists don’t simply forecast one rainfall total.
The reason is that tropical rainfall is highly localized.
The lower number represents what many locations may receive, while the higher number reflects the possibility that persistent rain bands could produce significantly greater totals in isolated areas.
It’s not uncertainty because forecasters don’t know what they’re doing—it’s uncertainty because that’s how tropical weather behaves.
Forecast Confidence Changes With Time
Several days before landfall, meteorologists focus on identifying the overall threat.
As confidence increases, forecast areas become smaller and more refined.
Even then, rainfall forecasts often continue to evolve until the storm actually arrives because radar observations begin showing where rain bands are organizing.
This is why forecasts are updated frequently during tropical events.
The Importance of Staying Flexible
Tropical Storm Beryl demonstrated why it’s important not to focus on a single rainfall number several days before landfall.
Instead, pay attention to the overall message:
- Heavy rainfall is possible.
- Flooding may develop quickly where rain bands persist.
- Forecasts will become more accurate as the storm approaches.
- Conditions can change rapidly, even on the day of landfall.

Forecasting tropical rainfall remains one of the greatest challenges in meteorology. While hurricane track forecasts have improved dramatically over the past several decades, predicting exactly where the heaviest rain will fall is still an evolving science.
Tropical Storm Beryl reinforced an important lesson for Southeast Texas: every tropical system is different, and small changes in storm track or rain band placement can lead to dramatically different impacts from one community to the next.
